According to the census of 1821 Mull
had a population of over 10,000. Today this has been
reduced to 2,700. Apart from
Tobermory there are
half a dozen other small settlements.
Fionnphort
is situated on the
south-west of the island opposite
Iona. A few miles
inland lies Bunessan and then apart from the small
hamlet of Pennyghael there is no settlement of note
until one comes to
Craignure. This is the terminus
for the Calmac ferry from Oban.
Half way up the north-east coast
Salen is a small village with a popular hotel on the
outskirts, Glenforsa which also has an airfield.
Dervaig is located in the
north-west of the island and is one of the most
attractive villages situated at the head of Loch
Cuin.
Calgary is really just a hamlet a
few miles from Dervaig but well worth a visit for
the fabulous white shell sand beach and stunning
coastal walks.
