Grading - Moderate
Terrain - Steep climb up to the fort, otherwise gentle moorland
(muddy) walk
Leave
your vehicle at one of the car parking areas in Salen Bay and walk
north towards Tobermory. The road can be quite busy here with
ferry traffic so walk in single file. If the tide is out there is
the option to walk along the shore looking out for the Salen
otters. There are currently 3 otters seen regularly in the bay. A
colony of common seals also reside in the bay and you should spot
these along with the numerous sea birds.

On reaching the telephone box, turn immediately left and follow
the private road up the hill to Glenaros House and farm
buildings. Follow it all the way to the top, past the farmstead
and go through the metal gate to the right hand side of Kate's
Cottage. Once through this gate, keep alongside the wall on
your left initially which will help avoid most of the mud.
Follow
the track heading for the ruins of the hill fort, Cnoc an Sroine.
It is worth taking a detour to climb this hill, there are
outstanding views of Loch na Keal to the west and Aros Castle to
the east. There are some remains of constructed walls and to the
south you can also see the Ben More group and the shores of Loch
na Keal and the large white shape of Knock house standing in the
trees.
Rejoin the track which
starts to go downhill once the
conifers
are in sight, ford the burn and once the well-defined track is
reached turn left. The path is very muddy in places so be prepared
to make a detour around the boggy areas. There are some fine
viewpoints down the Sound of Mull and to Glenforsa airfield. The
path finally drops down through the woodland and comes back into
the village close to the public toilets in Salen. Turn left and
walk up the bay back to the car park.
