Isle of Iona

Sea Eagle Hide, Loch Frisa, Aros, Isle of Mull

Come along and see the most famous pair of White-tailed Eagles in the country, ‘Skye’ and ‘Frisa’, at the only public viewing hide of its kind anywhere in the world.

Make a date with nature at Loch Frisa and learn all about these rare and magnificent birds of prey, as well as a host of other wildlife that can be found in the area. Ranger-led trips to the hide operate all-year-round, but are most popular during Spring and Summer, when the eagles are nesting.

Booking is essential for these trips that last two hours and cost £4.00 for adults and £2.00 for children (under 16 years).

Mull Rail

The 260 mm gauge steam and diesel trains that link the ferry terminal at Craignure with Torosay Castle, is the only railway on the Isle of Mull. The train timetable is linked to coincide with the ferry to and from Oban and operates between April and October 2010.

The train journey is a special treat for all children (and adults, too!) and runs along the beautiful coastline of the Sound of Mull, with spectacular views north to the mountains of Glencoe and Ben Nevis. Additional trains will operate during the Easter holiday weekend, 2nd - 5th April and special ‘Teddy Bear Express’ days will take place every Wednesday during July and August. Younger children can bring their favourite bear on holiday with them and enjoy a free ride on the railway.

Calgary Art in Nature

A remarkable series of wooden sculptures, set in the semi-natural woodlands around Calgary Farmhouse in 1999, with a view to provoking greater awareness of art in nature. The woodland is a treasure trove of excitement for children to explore, as they search for the ‘hidden’ sculptures and a walk among the birdsong and wild flowers can be combined with a visit to the nearby beach.

Calgary Beach Art Competition

The silver-white sands and aquamarine water make Calgary Bay a glistening jewel in the Isle of Mull’s crown. It is a magical place for families to relax, enjoy a picnic and walk barefoot along the tideline. Kids can safely splash in the shallows and make sand castles further up the beach. Why not be creative and enter into ‘Art in Nature’s’ ongoing ‘Beach Art’ competition by designing your own sand sculpture?

Swimming Pool

The Isle of Mull Swimming Pool, situated overlooking Craignure Bay, was opened in 2008. Much of the £1.8 million cost was met by over 25 years of fundraising effort by islanders themselves. As well as the feature 16 metre x 6.5 metre pool for swimming and water fun, there is a paddling pool for younger children to splash around in. For Pool opening times please telephone the number below.

Aros Park

The entrance to Aros Park is situated just a mile outside of Tobermory and is the most wonderful place for children. There is good parking, disabled access, clear, unobstructed paths, barbeque facilities, fabulous kids's play areas and toilets. All these facilities are free of charge.

There is a small lochan within the park, very popular for catching Rainbow Trout. Fishing permits are not expensive for the children and can be purchased from Brown's Ironmongers in Tobermory.

There are many walking trails within the park, a free map can be collected from the Visitor Information Centre at the Harbour Building in Tobermory. The map will show the location of 3 spectacular waterfalls within the park.
